Underglaze Crayon

These crayons are a little softer than the ones you used in school, but are firmer than the oil pastels. You can sharpen them with the large port of any standard pencil sharpener to get a really nice point. They blend well, feel great on bisque ware, and lack any scratchiness. On bone dry clay they can work, but you'd probably need to paint the clay with a thin layer of dilute school glue to harden it before drawing.

Before firing, they act as a colorful resist and repel glaze. After burning away the wax, you can glaze on top of them. Bisque fire them to cone 04 to get them to adhere well for glazing. If you can’t bisque them that hot, cheap hair spray works great as a fixative to help avoid smudging them while glazing.
