Originally located In Coalville UT, Sunstone Pottery & Supply has been creating handmade, functional pottery since 1985. Over the years, we have faced challenges in sourcing the materials we need to continue our craft. In response to these difficulties, we took the opportunity to become a distributor for a large clay processor, ensuring that we always have access to the finest quality materials. Now we are the leader in Ceramic Supplies in the Intermountain Region.

    About Jim:

    Founder of Sunstone Pottery Supply

    I'm Jim, the guy who got his hands dirty with clay back in 1974. It all started during my time at Dixie College (now Utah Tech) while studying to be a graphic artist. Little did I know that a mandatory ceramics class would change the course of my life. At first, I protested, eager to graduate without it, but once introduced to the material, I discovered a new direction.

    It wasn't just about the clay; it was the entire process that intrigued and continues to challenge me. After graduating from Dixie College, I married Dena, my steadfast supporter in my journey as a ceramic artist. I then shifted to Weber State University to further my art education, earning a BS in 1976 before moving on to Arizona State University, where I received my MFA in 1979.

    Teaching for three years at different colleges followed, but my passion lay more in working with the clay than in teaching others. In 1984, we took the plunge and started our full-time pottery business, specializing in high-fired stoneware and porcelain.

    Fast forward to 1990, we ventured into distributing clay, equipment, and other materials on a small scale. This side of the business grew, allowing us to cater to the needs of the ceramic community. While it keeps me from getting my hands as dirty with clay these days, the challenge and enjoyment of working with clay remain.

    Looking ahead, I'm excited about creating with clay for many more years.

    Born and raised in the world of ceramics, I'm on a mission to keep the family legacy alive. Dad's the mastermind behind the pottery wheel, and I'm here to make sure our little business thrives.

    We're not a big corporate deal; we're more like your artsy next-door neighbors who happen to run a cool pottery joint. Beyond just selling supplies, I'm passionate about serving the ceramics community. Whether it's helping beginners get started or supporting seasoned artists, I'm all about fostering a space where creativity can flourish.

    When I'm not knee-deep in clay and glaze, you'll catch me busting some moves on the dance floor, adding color to canvases, or escaping into the great outdoors for a hike or camping trip. Oh, and I'm a dog person – my furry buddies are my partners in crime.

    As our bookkeeper extraordinaire, Dena dives into the nitty-gritty of numbers with a kind of finesse that makes balancing books look like an art form. But her role goes way beyond the digits. She's the secret sauce that adds flavor to the family spirit we've got going on here.

    Being Jim's other half, Dena brings more than just financial know-how to the table. She's the warm, welcoming presence that makes our little pottery haven feel like home. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a clay newbie, Dena's got a smile and a wave for you.

    Outside the world of receipts and ledgers, Dena is a cheerleader for all things creative. She's the one ensuring that our business isn't just about the bottom line, but about building a community where everyone feels like they belong.
